Block connections to your Mac with a firewall

Common Windows application issues

Error 1001 during installation

This error often appears when you install the application on Windows 7 that is not up-to-date.

Please first update your Windows system through Windows Update, then try installing the application again. Also, make sure that your .NET Runtime is updated to version 4.8.

You can also try disabling your antivirus / firewall / security software, and then reinstalling the NordVPN app again.

Crash / Freeze

Press the Windows+R key combination to open the "Run" window. Type in without the quotes and press Enter to open the "Services" window. In the services list, find and right-click Task Scheduler. Click Start if it is not running. Repeat Step 3 for Windows Event Log.

Application Kill Switch does not work

Make sure to add the direct executable file in the NordVPN app. Go to Settings, select Kill Switch in the left sidebar menu, and click on Add apps. For example, you can add Skype to the Kill Switch list by adding this file:

C:Program Files

No internet access once connected to a VPN server

First, try changing the server you are connecting to. If that does not help, try changing the connection protocol: a) Switch to OpenVPN (TCP); b) Switch to Nordlynx.

The issue may also be caused by your antivirus, firewall, or other security software. Try disabling it (or, better yet, uninstalling it) and check if the issue remains.

Additionally, please try performing a network flush:

Open the NordVPN application. There, head to the advanced section. Click Run diagnostics tool. In the opened window, select Network flush. Restart your PC and try connecting to the servers again.

A certain feature of the application is not working properly

Once more open the settings menu. Head to the advanced section. Click Run diagnostics tool. In the opened window, select Reset app. Re-launch the application.

As a last resort, you could try other methods to connect. Some of our users reported that the NordVPN application started working for them again when they used an alternative connection method (a tutorial for OpenVPN GUI can be found here).

Antivirus

Then, tap, OK. Make sure to restart the computer.

Next, click the slider to off position in the General Settings tab.

Norton 360 Firewall Blocking File Sharing

If Norton 360 firewall blocks file sharing, it is because the application's default configuration prevents file sharing and remote desktop. You need to go to the Norton application and check the trust level of your network. In case your computer is connected to a restricted network, the public network exceptions will be disabled by default.

You can follow these guidelines to resolve the Norton 360 firewall blocking file-sharing issue.

Block connections to your Mac with a firewall

If the lock at the bottom left is locked , click it to unlock the preference pane .

If the Firewall Options button is disabled, first click Turn On Firewall to turn on the firewall for your Mac.

Click the Add button under the list of services, then select the services or apps you want to add. After an app is added, click its up and down arrows to allow or block connections through the firewall.

Blocking an app’s access through the firewall could interfere with or affect the performance of the app or other software that may depend on it.

Important: Certain apps that don’t appear in the list may have access through the firewall. These can include system apps, services, and processes, as well as digitally signed apps that are opened automatically by other apps. To block access for these programs, add them to the list.

When your Mac detects an attempt to connect to an app you haven’t added to the list and given access to, an alert message appears asking if you want to allow or deny the connection over the network or internet. Until you take action, the message remains, and any attempts to connect to the app are denied.
